St. Patrick’s Day Craft

Do you ever have one of those days where you just decide
you don’t feel like doing what it is in your plans?
Or all of a sudden you decide, “Let’s just do this…..”
Even though nothing is really setup!
Kiddos only had school Wed-Friday.
Why are short weeks feel longer than normal weeks?!
We had a fire assembly Wednesday morning during reading time.
A kiddo pulled the fire alarm during reading on Thursday
and we stood in the freezing cold + slush for over a half an hour.
Today, we had our Black History Program at 9:30 AND 1:30 with NO specials.
But today, I have no idea why, I decided, “Let’s just change things up.”
Half way through this I thought to myself,
“Why do I always do this on event days?!”
As kiddos were looking/reading their new library books,
I drew out 18 rainbows with black marker
We then colored each section.
I then modeled what to do with the fruit loops,
making sure to point out that I did not want just 4 fruit loops on one color.
Because you all know we have those “speedy early finishers:)”
They had the choice of letting the fruit loops touch or about another “fruit loop space away.”
Dumped out a few hands full of fruit loops and the kids went to work!
{left over from our FAILED fruit loop 100th day necklaces!}
We then let them dry for a few hours.
I love how they all look different based on how many fruit loops they used,
how they glued them, and even how dark or light they colored!
And then I free cut out some pots, gold coins, and a cloud.
I planned on using cotton balls, of course, but realized I took them home!
So…….teacher creativity in the works….we ended up using coffee filters!
It worked AMAZING!
I may NEVER use cotton balls again, the coffee filters didn’t stick to their lil’ hands!
I let the kiddos cut their gold coins smaller if they wanted.
The only thing I’ll do differently next year,
you know when I actually don’t decided last minute to do this,
is to attach the cloud and pot BEFORE we put on the fruit loops.
Just so you know, you can staple into hard fruit loops:)
And it worked just fine.
I also would like the pots to be a little bigger.
But…..an unplanned project looks pretty cute:)
We also did write a poem for the rainbow,
“Rainbows are as red as _______” format.
I’ll be making a printable for my kiddos final draft and will post it later!
Happy Friday!!
I wasn’t too sure if it was going to get here or not!

    1. They'll love it! My kiddos had a great time and they didn't even get to eat any! Mostly because I had been snacking on them since the 100th day of school, so we didn't have many extras left over! Luckily, just enough to get them completed.

    1. I stood there staring into my craft cubbard wondering what I was going to do! I just had ENOUGH for each student. Luckily! I hate leaving projects unfinished because we have a hard time going back to complete them.

    2. What is on the coffee filters that make them look puffy? I love this idea just thinking my 20 kids range from 1-3 so the coloring might have to be done by the parents. As far as the paper used for the rainbow, pot and coins any recommendations? How many boxes of fruit loops are we talking lol? Thank you 🙂

  1. I tried to comment on my phone but it wouldn't let me. I just wanted to tell you that you are amazing and my impromptu activities always turn out disgusting. haha!

  2. I totally relate to what you are saying…my co-worker and I always joke about how on special event days we wait until the last ten minutes of the day to do some crazy craft, where we have to paint everyone's hands and feet!

    Your craft is adorable!

  3. How cute are those! I have brain pops all of the time! Yesterday we did a brain pop craft painting with corn syrup. I made several different colors. We could do rainbows that way too…the effect was really neat. I am just waiting to see how they dry!

  4. This is PERFECT! I too have LOTS of Fruit Loops left over from not even attempted 100th day necklaces! LOL… and the coffee filter is genius! Thank you so much for sharing!
