Measuring with 1 Fish, 2 Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish!

·

IMG_0751 Today we had a blast measuring items around our classroom with fish!  To get students excited, we started off by reading One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish!  Every year at Reading Across America Week, I always reflect back on my first year of teaching and how awful I was at reading Dr. Seuss books!

IMG_0753I love to allow my students the chance to work with partners as often as possible.  Most of the time I let them create their own partners, which normally ends up to be about a group of students working together.  As long as they are working and discussing the activity, I am happy!  A handful of students sometimes chose to work alone, also.  I will ask these students if they would like to join a group just to double check it is their own choice.

IMG_0765During this lesson, I really stepped back and let the kids run the activity on their own.  Since we measured with nonstandard items yesterday, this was a great review and a quick way to assess students measuring skills.
