Me on the Map!

·
Happy, Saturday! Is anyone else mourning the fact that this is the LAST Saturday of June?Where the heck did June go?  Can July PLEASE go slower?  My summer to-do list has way too many things still on it!
At the beginning of every school year,I start off the year with my
All About Communities packet.
In addition to this unit, I love to read the book
Me on the Map (Dragonfly Books)

If you haven’t read it, it is a short, sweet book to teach students where the heck they live! Every year I am amazed that half of my students’ have no idea what state we live in. And let’s not even talk about our country or continent. My first year of teaching I asked my class to raise their hand if they had ever been to The United States of America. I had one student raise his hand.

O.N.E

This book keeps it simple.  No fluff. It gets to the point and sticks to it. A great, easy way for students to grasp the concepts. I like that.  I love it.  They need it.  Win. Win.  Every year I rush to get a little crafitivty created  with this book for open house.

Last year, I decided to make a mobile.  Why?

I have no idea because I despise having to put things on string.I want things even.  I want them straight.This doesn’t always happen with 2nd graders {really still first graders}. I ended up doing most of the work.

What?  Why?

My favorite quote is, “Never work harder than your students.”  I have no idea who said it, but I’ve always remembered it. It’s time to get back to those ways.  It’s time to let some things go.

{At least I’ll try…I’ve been trying for 6 years}

Anyone else with me?

I’m hoping this packet will help me.  And maybe you! Like the book, I kept the unit short & sweet.  It gets the job done without a ton of prep. You can check out this unit here.
