Team Teaching Tuesday

Today was the first day I’ve taught since Thursday.
Heck, it has been the first day that I’ve been up for more than 3 hours at a time.
My body has been fighting off some infection, not sure exactly what.
And due to it, my lymph node behind my year is swollen and the size of a golf ball.
Who knew that little sucker of a lymph node could cause such pain?!
I’m hoping and saying a few prayers that it’ll start going down.
Otherwise, its back to the doctor for more tests.
A few blood tests came back high also,
so I’m attempting to drink as many liquids besides diet pop and coffee
before the “check up” on the blood tests in a few weeks.
It is possible that being dehydrated could have caused the high results.
And considering how long it took and how many hand smacks on my vines
it took to get blood, this could be a possibility:).
Thank h.e.a.v.e.n.s a new sub I’ve never had was in love with my kids.
She picked up my job for both days.  And left the kindest notes.
The kiddos also enjoyed her.
It almost made me think I could have stayed home today like the doctor order.
But it felt good to see those little faces and see the cheers of, “She’s back!”
Even with the golf size lymph node + pain, the day went smooth.
It may have been the pep talk of being “shipped off” if anyone wasn’t doing their jobs.
Shipped off as into a buddy room:)
I may have said I could start a cruise line
and have one student doing their job be the captain:)
Sometimes it is all about survival.
I want to be able to go back the rest of the week!
Long story short.
I don’t have a lot of fantastic things setup yet to blog about.
Slowly chucking away at a few new units.
And slowly staying a float in the classroom.
{For those that have emailed about my reading plans, many of you I am unable to responde to through email due to you being a “no reply blogger.”  I will do a follow up post in the next few days.}
Want to become someone I can email back directly?  Check out how here!
But….I’ll log up with my friend Steph, over at Falling into First Grade.

8:40    Teachers required to be in the building:)
8:45:   Kiddos start coming from breakfast (breakfast starts at 8:20 & is free)
9:05:   Tardy bell/bell-work
~Kiddos start bell-work whenever they “stagger” into the classroom from breakfast.  They then do other jobs like get book box, etc.
9:15:   Reading {Whole group}
9:30:   Reading rotations
~We have 4 rotations.  Rotations include teacher time/small group, centers, read/journal, and free choice.  We follow daily 5, but in our own special way.  Mini-lessons do not break up our rotations due to already having kiddos use to the rotation during previous years of Reading First.
11:00  Writing #1
~ Lots and lots of modeling going on in this first half hour of writing! Modeling means kiddos have their hands free, ears and eyes on the teacher.  I do think aloud modeling WITHOUT asking for kiddos input.  I make sure to do a lot of “mistakes” and discuss out loud how I caught the mistake, etc.  All of this modeling of course is done after anchor charts, etc based on what we will be writing about.
12:00  Lunch
12:30  Recess
~Depending on how quick kids get to recess from lunch, they are only allowed 5 minutes with their teachers present.  No ifs and whats about it.  If we go out side, we come in at 12:40 on the dot. 🙁
12:40  Writing #2
~Normally this time is spent on kiddos working on the writing for the day.  I walk around and help out kiddos individually.  I also try to pull as many kids as possible, but due to our strict time limits, it doesn’t get done daily.  Kiddos are encouraged to help each other and use resources in the classroom.
1:00   Math
~We use Math Expressions curriculum in our classroom.  I have a love/hate relationship with this.  We do a LOT of marker board work, group work, whole group, etc.  Math talk is a big part of our daily routine, however, I’ve adapted it to meet my kiddos needs.  The book wants the kiddos doing most of the “math talk” independently.  This just does.not.work for my kiddos.  We still do it, I just lead it a tad more than the book asks.
2:00   Specials
~This is the time I’m rushing around trying to pick up, organize, plan, laminate, put copies in, you name it.  Oh, and of course the meetings!
2:55  Science/Social Studies
~I pray and try so hard to get to this every.dang.day.  The plans are ready each day.  But sadly, if math takes too long, I push math over into this area.  It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes.
3:50  Clean up
3:55  Dismissal

  1. You are what we call a "late start" school – do any schools in your district start earlier? I used to be an early, early start – 8:10 but when they closed several schools our start times changed. We start at 8:30 now…perfect…not too early, not too late!

    Hugs to you…FEEL BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Wow! We have to be at school at 7:40 and our students come into the building at 7:50. I hope you feel better soon! I love it when I find amazing subs…..there is a gal right now that I call every time I am sick or will be gone because I know I feel better when she is there because she is fantastic with my students!! 🙂 That always makes a world of difference.

  3. Wow…I can't believe how long your day seems! Seems like such a late start and late dismissal! Our kids come at 7:30 for breakfast but then we do a morning walk at from 7:55-8:10, so they don't stagger in at all times. (well except those tardy kids) Our tardy bell is 8:15. We dismiss primary kiddos (k-3) at 2:20 and the older dismiss at 3:00. I hope you feel better. It's hard to teach when you don't feel great but also hard to leave your kiddos–

  4. So sorry you're sick : (

8:40 is very close to my current schedule. I get to work at 8:00, kids come at 8:35, and we go til 3:30. I worked at a school that STARTED at 7:25 a couple years ago (TOO EARLY!)

I feel bad for students in America with all the recess being cut short! Kids in the UK get 20 minutes in the morning and 1 hour for lunch/recess.

    Feel better!!

  5. Oh my goodness…do you know I would give to be able to go to work at 8:30???????? I have to be there are 7:30 and I'm normally there are 7:40 just in time to pick kids up. Not in years past, but as I get older, I seem to not be able to get going as quick in the morning.

I'm obsessing over your chevron right now….love pink and turquoise:)

  6. Isn't it so nice to walk in from being out after a few days to have your sub singing their praises in a note? Your schedule is jam packed girl! With ten minute of recess your kids are lucky to have a teacher that embraces the Gummy Bear Song 🙂 Thanks so much for linking up and sharing! And I hope you kick that bug STAT!!!
