Martin’s Big Words Easy Project

I love to read “Martin’s Big Words” to my kiddos each year.
This year I was pretty impressed that one of my kiddos could remember the line,
“Use your words and not your fists” from when his teacher read it last year.
I really believe this a book kids will always remember.
This year I came up with this idea right before bed.
I always get my good ideas right before bed, anyone else?!
I made a little mishap on my final product.
Half way through I realized I wrote “dreams,” instead of Big Words!
So…tomorrow….when my kiddos actually do it,
it’ll say “__________ Big Words!”
I simply cut out a cloud shape using bright colored paper.
I wanted a very simple project that I felt connected with the time period.
And then “wordled” styled the words in white crayon.
I showed my kiddos today the final product and they were very excited!
We discussed how the colors connect to the book.
The kids were easily able to explain that the white crayon symbolizes white people
and the black paper symbolizes the black people.
We did the brainstorming today,
and I was very impressed with the words they came up with.
I had them come up with “Big Words” for just our classroom, to make it a little easier.
The only words I brought up were “colorful, many cultures, and do your job.”
I really like the words, “manners, wait, be patient, and care for.”
My freebie liscenses still hasn’t been delivered to my inbox,
so hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to post the printables I’ve created for the book
“The Crayon Box That Talked.”
Note to self:
Just because it was 60 degrees yesterday and we took our coats off at recess,
doesn’t mean you should rock a high heeled boot in the middle of winter.
Walking at dismisal was rough since it just broke loose then, of course.
Walking to the car, was rough
Please ignore the tights, I didn’t have brown and already had this outfit in mind!
It was super icy, black ice style on my way home.  Lots of wrecks.
I…almost…wrecked..my..sister’s…new….suv…ah!!!

  1. THANK YOU FOR THE FABULOUS IDEA! I was trying to find something easy to do with Martin's Big Words! We read The crayon book yesterday and I turned the kiddos into big crayons for the hallway (and I may have spent my evening sitting on the floor making a giant box for them). Have a great rest of the week!

  2. I LOVE your boots! I was afraid to wear mine today, we got a bunch of snow and I'm graceless enough on normal ground! I so enjoy reading about your projects 🙂

  3. Love it!!! I think you got more snow than us! 😛 Where did you get your boots. I MUST find some some (but I need wide calf *tear*)

  4. We all had heart attacks today and bundled up for recess because it was in the 40s today…I am so jealous of your snow! (and your boots!!) Thanks for the great ideas!
